Joi Ito

Joi ItoKeynote Speaker
Radical and brilliant, Joi Ito epitomises the future of marketing. He’s prepared an address specifically for this conference on, amongst other things, what marketers should be doing now to prepare for consumers’ future consumption of media.

Raised in both Tokyo and the Silicon Valley, Joi has served as a board member of ICANN, the Internet’s governance organisation; he became a “guild master” in the World of Warcraft online fantasy game; and has been involved in more than a dozen investments in start-ups like Flickr, Last.fm and Twitter. Then in 1994 he helped establish the first commercial Internet Service provider in Japan.

He was also an early participant in the open-source software movement and is a board member of the Mozilla Foundation, which oversees the development of the Firefox web browser, as well as being the co-founder and chairman of Creative Commons, a non-profit organization designed to promote the sharing of digital information.

In recognition of Joi’s outstanding career he was recently appointed to the lofty role of Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, where his peers believe “He can position the lab at the edge of change and propel it for a decade.”

Joi is a true maven, and he’s certainly not afraid to shake the ‘future tree’ and see what falls out.

Come and hear what Joi has to say – he will entertain and enthrall you, but most importantly he will teach you how to prepare for the future.

  1. well WOW does have 11.1 million subscribers, which is not to be sneezed at. (And if you did, there’s probably a potion that would take care of it.) Joi’s a pretty flash-pants speaker for an NZ event … just one of the points on his CV would make him worth listening to.
